Five Moves That Transform Event Fundraising Revenue

Updated: Jul 17

Fundraising events are often the biggest line item on a nonprofit's fundraising calendar and can be the biggest source of stress. They can require months of planning, hundreds of moving pieces, and a significant investment of staff and volunteer time. Yet too often, organizations measure success by attendance instead of revenue, donor engagement, or long-term relationships.

We work to support our clients across the fundraising continuum. We know that in small and mid-sized nonprofits it is often the case that one person, the Executive Director, the Director of Development, or even a program staff member, is tasked with wearing a lot of hats and doing EVERY job.

One of the principles behind Team Kat & Mouse is that the best results come from bringing the right expertise to the table. We know where we add the most value and we also know when it's time to invite a trusted partner who lives and breathes a particular area of fundraising.

You may have seen this in action when we welcomed Adam Levine to our recent webinar on The ABC’s of AI.

While we've planned and managed countless fundraising events throughout our careers, our greatest expertise is building the fundraising strategy that surrounds them. That's why, when clients need specialized event and auction expertise, we're excited to bring in professionals who focus exclusively on that work.

Today our blog is shared by Jennifer Downes, CFRE, BAS and Hallie Peilet Young, CFRE, BAS of From the Heart Fundraising. Their expertise is creating intentional and inspirational events, especially auctions that activate generous donors. Jennifer and Hallie share with us five of the strategies they see make the biggest difference between an event that simply entertains guests and one that truly advances philanthropy.

Most fundraising events don’t have a generosity problem - they have a

strategy problem. After supporting hundreds of nonprofit galas and fundraisers across the country, we’ve found five elements consistently increase revenue and donor engagement:

1. Lead With Sponsorship. Secure major sponsors before focusing on auction procurement. Sponsorship revenue provides the financial foundation for your event, covering costs and generating income before guests even arrive. When that base is in place, your auction and paddle raise become opportunities to exceed your goal rather than simply meet it.

2. Design the emotional arc. Every successful fundraising event tells a story. A compelling mission moment video (3–4 minutes is ideal) should build an emotional connection and flow seamlessly into a clear, confident ask. Donors give when they understand both the need and the impact of their generosity.

3. Curate, don’t clutter. When it comes to live auctions, more isn't better. A thoughtfully curated selection of unique, high-value packages creates excitement and encourages competitive bidding. A shorter, more intentional auction also keeps the program moving and leaves guests energized rather than exhausted.

4. Anchor your paddle raise. Set intentional giving levels that clearly connect to your mission and the impact each gift will make. Begin with leadership-level gifts, pause confidently between asks, and allow your lead donors to establish the pace. Their generosity inspires others to participate at every level.

5. Steward immediately. The event isn't over when the last guest leaves. Thank donors, sponsors, volunteers, and attendees within 24–48 hours while the experience is still fresh. Prompt, genuine stewardship reinforces the donor's decision to give and lays the groundwork for stronger relationships—and future support.
