A New Point of View: How Changing Your Perspective Can Improve Your Nonprofit Fundraising

My desk is wood, the walls are beige, and I sit in the same chair most every day.

If you're like me, most of your daily steps are earne walking to refill your coffee or water, or maybe grab a snack.

But sometimes, it's important to change your view. Literally. And sometimes, changing your view helps you see things in a completely different light.

I've always been a fan of working outside. Of course, when you live in Florida, that's only an option during the winter — in the summer, the sun will bake you to a crisp. But there's something about moving outside, sitting somewhere different, smelling fresh air, working from a coffee shop, or simply changing your surroundings that gets your brain working differently.

And if you haven't taken a vacation yet this year, maybe that's your sign. You may come back with more than a few vacation photos — you might come back with a new idea.

Why a Change in Perspective Sparks New Ideas

There's a reason we often come back from vacation with new ideas, new energy, and a slightly different outlook. Getting away from the familiar gives us the chance to notice things we might otherwise miss.

You see a different city.

You meet different people.

You experience a different pace.

And sometimes you come home thinking, "Why didn't I think of that before?"

That's the power of a new point of view — and the same idea applies directly to nonprofit fundraising.

Are You Looking at Your Fundraising Strategy the Wrong Way?

When was the last time you looked at your fundraising from a different perspective?

Most organizations spend their time viewing fundraising from the inside out. We know our programs. We know our statistics. We know our history. We know how hard our staff works.

And because we know all of that so well, it's easy to assume our donors know it too.

But what if they don't?

Your donor doesn't see your organization the way you do — and that's not a bad thing. It's an opportunity.

Try Sitting in Your Donor's Chair

Ask yourself:

  • Would I understand why this matters?

  • Would I feel connected to the people being helped?

  • Would I know what my gift actually makes possible?

  • Would I be inspired to act — or would I simply keep scrolling?

Sometimes the problem isn't the program. It's the point of view.

Change the View, Change the Story

Improving donor engagement often starts with a simple shift: stop leading with your organization, and start leading with the people you serve.

Instead of:

"For 35 years, our organization has provided…"

Try:

"For 35 years, families in our community have had a place to turn…"

Instead of listing programs, tell donors what those programs make possible. Instead of saying "your support is important," show them why.

Fundraising is ultimately about creating a connection between a person who cares and a problem they can help solve. That connection gets lost when we become too close to our own work.

5 Ways to Get a Fresh Perspective on Your Fundraising

This week, try something different:

  1. Move your laptop to another room.

  2. Take your next meeting outside.

  3. Sit somewhere you don't normally sit.

  4. Read your latest fundraising email as if you've never heard of your organization before.

  5. Ask someone outside your organization to read it — and pay attention to what they see, what they understand, what questions they have, and what makes them want to know more.

And if you haven't taken that vacation yet — go. Step away. Recharge. See something new.

Because sometimes the best fundraising ideas don't come from working harder. They come from looking at the work differently.
