'Auld Lang Syne’ - Lessons for a New Year in Fundraising

Updated: Dec 2, 2023

New Year Fundraising

So many have asked (including Harry & Sally - in a movie with lessons for another blog)…but what does it really mean?

“Auld Lang Syne” was initially written in the Scottish language,

And directly translates to “old long since,” meaning, essentially, times gone by.

We all certainly all have a tale of times gone by since March 2020.

Sourdough starters and Zoom calls pale compared to the need to keep our loved ones close.

But as we look to 2022, let’s really think about what we have learned from Auld Lang Syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Maybe we ask…

Should old jobs and bosses be forgotten and never brought to mind?

Yes and No.

Sometimes when you leave a job, you are sad, disappointed, maybe even mad. I promise you each job, and each boss has a lesson to teach you. Even the worst situation has a lesson buried inside the angst…

Even if the lesson is ‘I will ask better questions before I take a job’… Take it with you and grow from the experience.

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For days of auld lang syne

A cup of Kindness…in 2022, be kind to those around you. Be a coach and a teacher…be a leader, not a boss. Try and make sure your lessons come to others as coaching and their mistakes are met with kindness and the memory that you made these mistakes too.

Let your cup of Kindness extend to yourself too. Take time to smell the roses, take your PTO and unplug.

We two have run about the hills,

and picked the daisies fine;

But we've wandered many a weary foot,

since auld lang syne.

In my eyes, this talks about teamwork - after all, picking daisies is hard work.

You and your team have made the last two years work as best as you could, and everyone might have weary feet. But, on to next year, with hopes of running towards larger donations, dancing with your team who has just surpassed their budget, and walking into Corporations, Foundations and partnerships with a new sense of confidence.

And there's a hand, my trusty friend!

And give me a hand o' thine!

And we'll take a right good-will draught,

for auld lang syne.

Let’s do this together!

At Team Kat & Mouse, we are committed to helping your organization grow fundraising results in 2022. This, through training, coaching, and an extra set of hands.

Reach out today and by next year we can move to…

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp

And surely I'll be mine

And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne

This means raise a glass of your favorite beverage and celebrate your successes in 2022!

And, From all of us at Team Kat & Mouse wishing you a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.
